Shell with a conical spire, the whorls but slightly convex, with low rounded longitudinal ribs, which are crossed by revolving riblets. Between these riblets there are revolving line, and there is a constriction at the upper part of the shoulder which cuts off the longitudinal ribs and leaves a row of nodules. Outer lip thick, varicose, strongly ridged within; inner lip generally having a series of nodu-lous plaits, and one strong plait above just below the angle. Color purplish brown, variegated arid clouded with white, the clouding often in somewhat longitudinal patterns. Length, 25 mm.; diameter, 15 mm.

Gemophos tinctus (Conrad, 1846) Tinted Cantharus
Distribution: North Carolina to Florida to Texas; West Indies; Bermuda; Brazil. Size: 18 to 35 mm
Description: Color is variable, from blue-gray to yellowish to chocolaté to milk white; shape elongate-conic; sculpture of spiral cords with finer striae in between with axial cords, producing weak nodules where they intersect spiral sculpture; shell with 5 to 6 convex whorls; aperture ovate; inner surface of thickened outer lip crenulate, larger plicae on upper part of outer lip, which borders the anal canal; pariétal shield smooth, terminâtes at angle.
Habitat: Sandy, shelly, and rocky habitats from shoreline to a depth of 80 m (262 ft). Remarks: Closest relative G. auritulus. See Lipka (1974); Odé (1983b). Synonym: Pisania tinctus (Conrad, 1846).
