Description

Shell of medium size, maximum height 53.9 mm (USNM 679197, Galapagos Islands), inflated (diameter / shell height, mean 0.67 ± 0.061, n = 7, range 0.55-0.72), moderately low-spired (aperture height / total shell height, mean 0.605 ± 9,932, range 0.55-0.67), biconic, very weakly constricted at base; spiral sculpture of last whorl consisting of five principal cords, two at shoulder angulation, a central cord ending in variably expressed labral tooth, and two basal cords; axial sculpture of last whorl consisting of eight to 12 ribs, forming tubercles on the two shoulder cords; outer lip moderately convex, with deep subsutural sinus; adaxial side of outer lip with ten weak, beaded lirae; aperture relatively broad, its height / breadth ratio 2.3—2.7; siphonal canal relatively short (canal height / aperture height, mean 0.27 ± 0.08, range 0.17-0.41); umbilical slit absent; external color white to buff with brown nodes; aperture white.

Interchangeable taxa

Leucozonia tuberculata, a species confined in the eastern Pacific to the Galapagos and Cocos Islands (see Skoglund, 1992), is the most heavily sculptured species of the genus, characterized by five strong cords, the upper two of which bear sharp tubercles. The aperture is relatively broad, and the outer lip bears a deep subsutural sinus and usually a sharp labral tooth. L. tuberculata is the only eastern Pacific Leucozonia with a labral tooth. The species varies little except in size. Only two specimens we have seen are 50 mm or higher, and six are 30 mm high or less. Specimens from Chatham Bay, Isla del Coco (SBMNH) have an unusually short siphonal canal, but do not differ in other ways from specimens at the Galapagos Islands. Lirae tend to be weakly expressed, and are absent on the largest specimen we have seen (USNM 679197, 4° 00'S, 95°58'W, Galapagos).
