Description

This is a very cone-like, very wide mitrid with W/L of illustrated specimens from 0.36 to 0.48 and a relatively high spire with concave spire sides and W/L from 0.24 to 0.37. There are about 5 teleoconch whorls on an adult shell with the body whorl and penultimate whorls smooth and glossy. The first three teleoconch whorls are brown and have 4 closely spaced, convex, spiral cords noded by narrow, axial riblets. The protoconch is brown with about 3 convex whorls. The body whorl is very slightly convex from the convex shoulder to the neck which is more convex. The outer lip is slightly convex from the shoulder to the anterior tip which curves sharply convexly to the anterior canal. The dorsal notch is prominent. The columella is almost straight bearing 4 significant, sharp, spiral folds. The columella is only callused in the fasciole area where it is not wide. The exterior is white to cream with a wide brown to grey-brown band on the body whorl that may cover most of the whorl below the suture to the fasciole and usually outside the callus on the fasciole area. The apex is brown-red. The most prominent color pattern feature is spiral brown-orange lines from the penultimate suture to the fasciole. There are white to light grey rectangular spots between these spiral lines with the spots aligned axially or obliquely to form intermittent lines. The aperture interior is dark brown. The columella retains the exterior colors except in the fasciole area which has a white callus. All the colors are subject to changes in tint and vividness.
The animal color pattern is quite consistent between molluscs from widely separated areas. Again, exact spot and band locations and intensity of color will vary. Also note that the background color in a photo will produce changes in perceived shell and animal coloration in photos as well as in visual observations.
