Shell to 27.0 mm in length, body whorl long, whorls number from 7-8 in addition to protoconch, whorls convex and subangulate. Sculptured with either a single spiral groove or cord on the spire whorls, cord usually with adjacent fine axial striae, shoulder of body whorl with either a cord and a fine groove or 2 grooves, center of body whorl smooth, lower half of whorl with 2 spiral grooves followed by 2-3 broad, flatfish cords and another 6-7 narrow, close-set basal cords. Aperture longer than the spire, smooth within, outer lip thickened and simple, start of aperture with a small shining callus pad on the parietal wall, columella with 4-6 angulate folds, siphonal canal straight or slightly twisted. Ornamented with narrow, white axial flames, 8-9 rows of interrupted orange-brown bands and dark brown spots at the sutures; interior of aperture brown, edge of outer lip white, some individuals with a pale lilac cast in the white flammules.

The species is closely similar to I. fulgetrum (Reeve) and differs mainly in its longer, more cylindrical body whorl and shorter spire. Further research into their relationship is clearly indicated.
