Description

Diagnosis: Shell narrowly fusiform, 8,5 whorls, medium size for genus, attaining 70 + mm in height; axial sculpture of 12 to 13 irregularly formed ribs; color buff-cream with small v-markings, spirally banded by broken blotches of irregular brown squares below the suture, midway and anteriorly on the body whorl; bands interrupted by zigzag patterns, especially at base of the body whorl; outer lip ringed within by a yellowish buff, submarginal callus; aperture white.
Description: Shell slender, fusiform; 2,5 smooth nuclear whorls; 6 post nuclear whorls; axial costae 12 to 13 per whorl, weakly developed on 1st and 2nd post nuclear whorls obsolete on 3rd and 4th whorls; prominent on penultimate whorl and body whorl; suture distinct, weakly channeled; aperture narrowly elongate, about ½ the height of the shell; interior of outer lip thickened submarginally by a lenticular callus in mature specimens, lacking marginal barbs; columella with 3 prominent adapical plications and 12 to 17 weak lirations extending into the aperture, terminating in a more prominent lira at the adapical end in mature specimens. Siphonal fasciole weak; anal sulcus narrow and shallow; operculum and radula unknown. Color, see diagnosis.
Emerson, W.K. 1985. Two new species of Lyria from the western Atlantic (Gastropoda Volutidae)
Type locality: Off La Paguera, Puerto Rico.
Range: Known only from Cabo Rojo and its vicinity, southeastern Puerto Rico. The living animal and its exact range remain unknown but its very small protoconch suggests a larger extension of its distribution, probably like the one of Lyria leonardi. Habitat: Deep water. All specimens are taken crabbed in fish traps at 250-300 m.
Description: Shell solid and heavy, fusiform, measuring up to 70 mm. Protoconch is small and smooth, of two and a half whorls. Spire is moderately high. Teleoconch is of six convex whorls sculptured by 13-15 axial ribs, weak on the first and the second postnuclear whorls, well-developed on the penultimate, often becoming axial nodules on
the body whorl and giving an angled outline. Suture is distinct and weakly channeled. Aperture is elongated measuring more than 0.60 of the total length. Outer lip is strongly thickened in adult specimens. Columella slightly concave bearing three prominent anterior plaits followed by numerous striae, the adapical last one the stronger. Siphonal notch weak.
Background colour is beige with a spiral row of subsutural brown blotches, the body whorl being sprinkled by fine reddish axial zigzag lines, concentrated into spiral bands on the mid and the anterior part of the body whorl.
Animal: Not available for study
Comparison: It has been confused with Lyria (Mitraelyria) beaui beaui at the beginning of its discovery. L. beaui differs by its numerous fine axial ribs on the entire teleoconch, a columella with a free-edged callus plate bearing 8-10 almost equal plaits, a pattern of interrupted spiral
lines.
Remarks: It is also a very rare shell, only ever caught crabbed in lobster pots.
