Description

The genus Pseudoliva was introduced by Swainson (1840) as part of Eburninae, now a synonym of Babyloniidae Kuroda, Habe & Oyama, 1971. For a discussion of Swainson's confusing use of Eburninae, we refer to Fraussen & Stratmann (2013). It was later on accommodated in Olividae Latreille, 1825, but is now considered to belong to Pseudolividae de Gregorio, 1880, together with 5 other Recent and 2 fossil genera. The genus itself only contains 3 Recent species, only one of which, Pseudoliva ancilla Hanley, 1860, occurs in South-African waters. The two other species, Pseudoliva crassa (Gmelin, 1791) and Pseudoliva sepimentum (Rang, 1832), are only known from western Africa. Recent explorations in East London, which is also home to P. ancilla, have yielded a number of puzzling specimens that can only be attributed to Pseudoliva, but which at the same time show a constant set of characteristics that make them stand apart from P. ancilla. They are hereby described as Pseudoliva aikeni sp. nov.
