Description

Shell almost globular, 27 mm in height and 23 mm in width, with deap suture and greatly expanded bodywhorl, sculptured by fine spiral furrows and moderately ragged growth lines; apex pointed, with unobvious sculpture; white surface covered by light-yellow epiderm; aperture pear-shaped, with polished interior, partly covered by a small translucent yellowish-brown homy operculum; outer lip arc-shaped; deep umbilicus partly hidden by a long callus. Distribution; Along the Chinese coasts; Japan. Ecology: Live on sand or sandy mud in shallow waters.
Zhongyan, QI, 2004. Seashells of China.
Distinctive features are
1) ovate shell up to 25 mm in height,
2) body whorl very high, forming the greatest part of the shell,
3) umbilicus deep, moderately open,
4) aperture wide, D-shaped, with thin parietal callus and long, vertical columellar lip,
5) outer surface with fine, even spiral grooves. Several shells referred to as Eunaticina papilla in the literature appear to be more globose and better match the characters of Eunaticina linnaeana Recluz, 1843.

Distribution

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Eunaticina papilla ranges from the Red Sea to Melanesia, occurring in fine sandy bottoms from the intertidal zone to about 30 m depth (HAYASAKA, 1961; HABE, 1968; ABBOTT & DANCE, 1982).
