Milk Moonsnail
Distribution: North Carolina to Florida to Brazil; Texas; Bermuda. Size: 18 to 38 mm
Description: Color milk white, fresh shells have a fine yellowish-white periostracum; shape broadly ovate; sculpture of teleoconch whorls slightly convex; body whorl broad and round; upper portion of umbilicus covered by a strong callus, giving chinklike appearance; operculum horny and usually a reddish-brown. Habitat: Intertidal in sand bottoms; shells washed ashore. In Texas found on offshore reefs and algal zones, such as those at Stetson Bank and FGB. Depth range Oto 120 m (394 ft).
Remarks: P. uberinus d'Orbigny, 1842 may only be a form of P. lacteus. Juveniles of P. lacteus are translucent with a distinct brownish protoconch. See Rehder (1981); Ode (1982b).
