Description

LION NUTCLAM
Leda leonina Dall. 1896 ; L. amiata Dall. 1916; L. liogona Dall I9l6
Shell elongate Rostrum long, broad (short in small specimens). Sculpture of strong, widely spaced commarginal ribs, frequently eroded in large specimens. Prodissoconch large, smooth, but eroded in large specimens. Escutcheon narrow, well demarcated. Periostracum very dehiscent, dark in large specimens. Length to 25 mm.
The relationship of this species to the Japanese N. (N.) sagamiensis Okutani, 1962, merits investigation. Southeast Bering Sea, Alaska (55°N) [USNM], to San Diego, California (32.7°N) [USNM]. and to Kamchatka in the western Pacific, in 350 - 2.500 m.
