The genus Diplodonta Bronn, 1831 can be defined as fol¬lows (Oliver, 1992:101):
"Small to medium size shells. Rather convex. Equivalve. Subequilateral. Outline suborbicular to subovate. Sculpture of concentric lines only more or less smooth. Hinge with 2 prominent cardinal teeth in each valve, median tooth bifid. Ligament on a flattened nymph barely visible externally. Anterior muscle scar not or slightly elongate, confluent with pallial line. Inner margin smooth". As the hinge is rather important in the differentiation of the species, it can be more fully described as consisting of two cardinal teeth, the anterior one in the left valve and the posterior one in the right valve bifid, i.e. split into two parts which are not very different in size. The single uncleft cardinal is much narrower than those parts. There are no lateral teeth although the uncleft cardinal has been taken for a lateral by some authors.
