"Prickly Scallop." Subequivalve, both valves convex, the left more so than the right; auricles unequal, the posterior the smaller; byssal gape deep and very strong; pectinidial teeth present, also a deeply furrowed fasciole; sculpture on the two valves of about 30 radial ribs, flanked on each side by a smaller one, all studded with small spinous scales; prodissoconch smooth, with concentric growth lines, the succeeding sculpture of plain riblets with scratched intervals, the scales developing later; shell colour, yellow, orange, brown, scarlet, or purplish. Length 75 mm, height 77 mm, section 28 mm. Type locality: Tasmania.
Loc.: Common throughout the whole South Australian coastline, beach and dredged to 55 fathoms. S.W.A, S.A, Tas, Vict. Remarks: Specimens are often separately enveloped in a thin sponge.
