The shell is medium-sized, and circular in shape, with almost equal ears. The left valve is rather flat, while the right valve is somewhat convex. Broad hut low ribs regularly radiate on the surface, and the interspaces are narrowly grooved, crossed by slightly lamellate growth lines. The color is very pretty golden orange with white blotches. The radial ribs are about 18 in number. Distribution in Japan: central Honshu and southwards, rather rare on shallow, fine sandy bottom.

Type Material: Syntypes - BM(NH) 74.12.11.375, 1950.11.14.58. Type Locality: China Sea.
(fide Adams MS in Adams & Reeve, 1850)
Additional Description: Shell is oval and equivalve. Both valves are somewhat convex with 18 to 20 radial ribs. The entire surface covered with fine concentric lamellae. Auricles equal. Coloration variable from brilliant white, orange to red, often with mottling of red, white or yellow markings. Size: Normal adult size range is 35 to 40 mm.
Distribution: Known from southern Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia. Habitat: Littoral to sublittoral zones, on sandy bottoms.
Remarks: Brightly colored A. striatula (Linnaeus, 1758) are sometimes mistaken for A. reevei, however, the auricles and sculpture are easily distinguishable. Many publications incorrectly list authorship as "Adams & Reeve, 1850". Following the original description it reads "Adams, MS", which clearly indicates that Reeve did not take part in describing this species.
