Description
Nerita versicolor Gmelin, 1791 Four-toothed Nerite
Distribution: Florida, Texas; West Indies; Bermuda. Size: 18 to 25 mm.
Description: Color white with black and pinkish marks on ribs; shell globose, solid with strong spiral ribs; columella bearing 4 (rarely 5) teeth with central teeth the largest; parietal area convex; inner portion of outer lip with shelflike denticulate projections; operculum papillose and weakly concave. Habitat: Along rocky shores facing the ocean.
Remarks: Very common on limestone rocky shores in the tropical Caribbean. Found on rocky shores in southern part of Texas coast. Found alive at SPI. See Abbott (1974); Redfern (2001).
Synonyms: N.flammea Gmelin, 1791; nigrocincta Usticke, 1959.
