Description

DESCRIPTION
From 40 to 70 mm. Shell strong, medium high-spired. The whorls are clearly stepped. Spiral sculpture formed by 6 strong bifid cords with fine threads between them. Axial sculpture formed with varices each 170° and 3 marked knobs between each varix. Siphonal canal medium sized. Aperture oval with smooth columellar wall and six patent teeth in the outer lip.The continuation of the body whorl and the columellar fold form a narrow and deep umbilicus. Operculum corneus with marginal nucleus. Basic color light brown with a white aperture. Known from W. Mediterranean and E. Atlantic (from France to S. Senegal). The Azores and the Canary Islands. In the Canary Islands it is found in the 7 islands in sublittoral waters. In Lanzarote it was commonly found in the past, in shallow waters in Arrecife, but nowadays it is seldom reported in that zone. It is not a common shell in the island and used to be found in sand near rocky walls at 15-20 m deep on the west side of the island.

REMARKS
Saunders considers it as a rare species whose distribution has decreased. Indeed he did not find it in the Canary Islands despite its presence confirmed by several posterior works. Anyway, the study of old material misidentified with C. dolaria can reduce the real presence around the West African coasts.
