Description

Diagnostic characters
Shell as in other Euspira species but with a taller spire nearly flat-sided in profile, as in E. nitida.. Outer lip arises tangential to last whorl, its initial part often slightly concave. Shell dark in colour, brown or chestnut, with no pattern. Umbilicus large.

Other characters
The columella is narrowed by the end of a groove emerging from the umbilicus, but is not notched as in E. montagui ; the ridge entering the umbilicus from the basal end of the narrower section of the columella is well developed. Much of the colour resides in periostracum, and the shell is paler where that is lost; the columella is always brown, however, and the base of the aperture white. Up to 25 mm high, 20mm broad; last whorl occupies 90% of shell height, aperture 75%.
Except for its colour (reddish brown, paler on the head and the edges of the foot) this animal is like the other species of the genus.
L. fusca is a southern species extending from the Mediterranean to the British Isles where it has been recorded from the western parts of the Channel, thence north along Irish and Scottish coasts. Not apparently found now in the North Sea and common only off west Ireland. The animals live sublittorally on muddy sand. Though presumably like those of other naticids the details of their breeding are not known.
