Description

Lyria beauii archeri: Type locality: Montserrat, West Indies.
Range: Apart from the holotype which is reported from Monserrat, all specimens known come from the west coast of Guadeloupe, Caribbean. Habitat: Shallow water, from 2 to 20 m in sand pockets among rocks.

Description: Shell is small, of 40-50 mm long, ovate with a glossy surface. Protoconch small and brown. Teleoconch of 6 slighty shouldered whorls sculptured by well-marked axial ribs, 13-15 on the penultimate whorl, 16-18 on the body whorl, crossed by revolving lirae on the base of the anterior canal. Columella arched bearing the same setting of plaits as on type species. Outer lip thickened, marked internally by weak serrations, sometimes absent in some mature specimens. Background colour variable, from dark brown to light chestnut. Pattern more contrasted than on beaui beaui with the spiral brown lines delimiting light and dark bands.
Animal: Head and foot are gold to pink, marbled with a fine net of reddish lined, slighty closer and thicker than the pattern of beaui beaui. Anatomy of animal has been well studied by Pointier, Delplanque & Poli (1979), pointing out the presence of very fine denticulations between the teeth of the tricuspid radula. These microsculptures are similar to the ones of Lyria (L.) cordis, a feature which led Bayer to create the subgenus Cordilyria (1971). This teeth sculpture is probably linked to a similar mode of feeding.

Comparison: Subspecies or ecophenotype of the first, it differs from the typical species only by its small size, its darker colour, and its slightly smaller protoconch.
Morphologically speaking, beaui archeri is close to other Indopacific Lyria such as L. delessertiana or L. mitraeformis, though without possible confusion.
Many specimens either by size or by colouration tend to look like the typical beaui beaui but no progressive variation is known up to now. Considered to be a valid species for a long time, it has been linked to Lyria beaui since the latter has been discovered in fair quantity and shows close relatioships in both shell characters and anatomy.
Remarks: Because many shells of Lyria beaui archeri bear a row of denticles or serrations along the inner side of the outer lip, this taxon was formerly placed in the genus Enaeta A. & H. Adams, 1853 by Dall (1907), an opinion followed by Weaver & duPont (1970). In fact the homogeneous genus Enaeta is characterized by an anatomy of the animal with a different radula and by its internal tooth which is strong and blunt with a different insertion.
