Description

TYPE MATERIAL Holotype (MNHN-IM-2000-34880) dim. 2.83 x 1.06 mm. Protoconch 0.18 0.18 mm. stn SS02. Paratype 1 (MNHN-IM-2000-34881) dim. 1.88 x 0.80 mm. Protoconch 0.18 0.18 mm. stn SS02.
TYPE LOCALITY Caribbean: French Guiana, Îles du Salut, Île du Diable, Pointe des Tortues, 4 m.
DISTRIBUTION French Guiana, Îles du Salut. MATERIAL EXAMINED Station of French Guiana: stn SS02, Île du Diable, Pointe des Tortues, 4 m, spms 2.
DESCRIPTION Shell medium in size, conical with slightly constric- ted base, sutures well distinct. Protoconch of leci- thotrophic type, dome-shaped, short of 1.5-2 smooth convex whorls; colorless, transparent. Teleoconch of 6 whorls; reticulate sculpture of 3 spiral cords crossed by axial ribs (about 22 on last whorl), cords and ribs equal in size; beads at each intersection. A fourth beaded cord is emerging at the base of the last whorl from the insertion of the outer lip followed by another more narrow one. Border between the base of the shell and columella highlighted by a thin furrow, columella short and broad, obliquely truncate; columellar callus bordering a subcylindrical aperture, anal sulcus and siphonal canal well defined. Color sandy yellowish but very probably slightly. faded.
COMPARISON Various Caribbean species with a protoconch of about 2 whorls are illustrated in Rolán et al. (2012): all show a relatively higher protoconch, not dome- shaped as in Sundaya soubzmaignei n. sp., some have a teleoconch rather similar. In particular Sundaya soubzmaignei n. sp., is compared with: Cerithiopsis movilla Dall & Bartsch, 1911, a completely brown species of larger size 3.8 × 1.6 vs 2.83 x 1.06 mm; Cerithiopsis satisnodosa Rolán & Fernández-Garcés, 2010 with a brown and more inflated teleoconch. The species Cerithiopsis iontha Bartsch, 1911, as illustrated in Rolán et al. (2012), has a very similar teleoconch with smaller dimensions and brown in color; the original design by Bartsch shows a more turreted shell with a thin spiral in the last whorl of the protoconch.
REMARKS The dome-shaped protoconch of only 1.5-2 whorls corresponds to the genus Sundaya Oliver, 1915, type species Sundaya exquisita from New Zealand; the genus is well present in the Indo-Pacific area. The smaller paratype 1, is an old shell completely faded but intact.
ETYMOLOGY Named after Sébastien Soubzmaigne, MNHN technician, a participant in the KARUBENTHOS and MADIBENTHOS expeditions, in recognition of his enthusiastically sieving and fractioning of large volumes of bottom material prior to the sorting for micromolluscs.
