TYPE LOCALITY Caribbean: Guadeloupe, Petite Terre. 15 m.
DISTRIBUTION Guadeloupe, Martinique.
DESCRIPTION Shell small, sub-cylindrical with impressed sutures. Protoconch conical of about 4.5 whorls, last 2 convex; seen under ESEM there is a thin spiral cord above the sutures and a very narrow band of axial riblets immediately below; last suture deeper. Color yellowish, semitransparent. Teleoconch of 5.2 whorls with reticulate sculpture of 3 spiral cords (1" spiral slightly narrower and less prominent) crossed by axial ribs, about 13 on last whorl; prominent beads at each intersection. A fourth cord is emerging at the base of the last whorl from the insertion of the outer lip; border between columella and base highlighted by a weak cord. Columella short and broad, obliquely truncated, with a surface crossed by thin crisp threads, columellar callus bordering an circular aperture; anal sulcus and siphonal canal well defined. Background color dark yellow with whitish beads.
COMPARISON Cerithiopsis hielardae n. sp. can be compared with Cerithiopsis parvada Rolán & Fernández-Garcés, 2007 which is similar in size, protoconch characteristics and very often in color but differs by a more rugged teleoconcah with deeper sutures, about 13 axial ribs vs about 18; beads are more prominent and whitish. These characteristics are constant in all the specimens examined. E
TYMOLOGY Named after Gaëlle Hielard, program officer at Office de l'Eau de la Martinique, in recognition of her support to, and facilitation outreach for, the MADIBENTHOS expedition.
