Description

Description (holotype): Shell medium-sized, fusiform, of 10 angulate teleoconch whorls, with long, straight siphonal canal, slightly inclined abaxially. Suture channelled due to raised subsutural portion of the whorls. Protoconch of 3.5 whorls, initial 1.5 smooth, last two with arcuate axial ribs. Subsutural cord moderately strong, spanning slightly less than half width of subsutural ramp, with one median ridge. Three narrow but distinct spiral cords between subsutural and peripheral cords. Peripheral cord similar to subsutural one, forming prominent shoulder angle; gemmate on all whorls. Gemmae weakly prosocline, shallowly bifid, 17 on first teleoconch whorl to 25 on antepenultimate whorl and 29 30 on penultimate and last whorls. Intervals with two feeble spiral threads. Shell base with five distinct, unevenly spaced primary cords, with 1 3 much smaller cordlets between them. Siphonal canal with more closely spaced, weaker, but distinct cords, alternating in width, diminishing towards the tip of canal, 18 in total. Anal sinus on peripheral cord, moderately deep. Aperture (without canal) 0.24 of SL. Shell very light tan, with slightly lighter canal. Radula (n = 1) comprising 30 transverse rows of teeth, of which about 10 nascent. Marginal teeth with rather short anterior solid part, constituting 0.25 of total tooth length, and limbs similar in width, accessory limb slightly shorter. Central formation absent. Measurements: Holotype (largest specimen) SL 34.3 mm, AL (without canal) 8.3 mm, SW 10.7 mm.

Etymology: The species is named after Barbara Buge, collection manager of MNHN, for her many years of indispensable service in maintaining the molecular collection of molluscs.

Remarks: Specimens of Taylorigemmula barbarae n. sp. show very little variation in shell shape and sculpture. The species is conchologically similar to Taylori gemmula fenestrata (Kosuge, 1990) from Western Australia in 200 m (18°25'S, 118°22'E), but differs from the latter in having a less pronounced subsutural cord and a straight siphonal canal.

Distribution: Taylorigemmula barbarae is presently known from a very small área east off Luzon Island, in the Philippines Sea; at depths of 98-335 m.
