Description

Rhinoclavis abbasi was described for the first time as follows in Malacologia Mostra Mondiale magazine of Italy, No 115, pages 40-41 as follows: Type material: Holotype (38mm high) deposited at ParisNational Museum of Natural History, France with Registration No MNHN-IM-2000-37338.
Other material: Paratype 1 (32.8mm) inj Dr Thachcollection; Paratype 2 (34.3mm) and Paratype 3 (31.8mm)in J.Abbas collection, Paratype 4 (34.2mm) in Steven Lie collection. All types from type locality.
Type locality: Regency of Selawati, south of Sorong Town. Indonesia
Habitat: mud in a big hole at shallow water (about 2m depth) in sea.
Description: Shell elongate-tapering and medium-sized for the genus with height range 31.8-38.0mm of collected specimens. Spire tall, sutures distinct. Shell width 36.8% of holotype height. Body whorl moderately inflated and occupying 52.6% of holotype height with strong axial ridge at lateral side and many spiral ribs at base. Sculpture cancellate with many granules, formed by intersections of strong axial ribs and deep spiral grooves; three primary spiral ribs at each spire whorl, the anterior one located far from suture; axial ribs curved and more closely-spaced at penultimate and body whorls. Aperture elongately ovate and occupying 41.6% of holotype height, outer lip thick and wavy. Columella highly calloused and well defined with a tooth at posterior part. Posterior and anterior canals very short. Siphonal fasciole closed, siphonal canal widely open and curved dorsally. Color dirty white.

Interchangeable taxa

The new species differs mainly from Rhinoclavis vertagus (Linnaeus, 1758) in (1) smaller adult size ) (2) presence of many spiral ribs at base of body whorl, (3) axial ribs at dorsal side not rectilinear, (4) lack of deep and broad pits between axial ribs below the suture of body whorl, (5) spire narrower and more pointed. (6) siphonal canal broader, (7) outer lip wavy at posterior part, (8) tooth not located at the middle of columella as written in literature. Etymology: The new species is named in honor of John Abbas from Indonesia for providing the type material.

Limpalaer (2023) wrote everything in his article but did not show any similarity between Rhinoclavis abbasi Thach, 2022 and Clavocerithium taeniatum (Quoy & Gaimard, 1834). It is regrettable that he got four specimens but did not know that they were not described! Rhinoclavis abbasi is distinguished mainly from Clavocerithium taeniatum in following characters: (1) spire more slowly tapering with concave sides, (2) body whorl shorter and broader, (3) presence of many curved axial ribs which are well seen at body whorl, (4) base sculptured with many strong ribs, (5) early whorls sculptured with more numerous rows of sharp granules, (6) presence of many granules at median whorls, (7) sutures less oblique, (8) anal canal more pointed, (9) anterior canal shorter. These numerous differences are sufficient to separate them into two species. Can Limpalaer show in paired photo the similarities between Rhinoclavis abbasi and Clavocerithium taeniatum to prove that his comment is correct? I do not agree on this synonymisation in MolluscaBase.
