Description

Type material: Holotype (20mm long x 15mm wide), deposited at Paris National Museum of Natural History, France with Registration No MNHN-IM-2000-38137.
Diagnosis: The new species is characterized by closely-spaced axial ribs, presence of a narrow tooth between two larger teeth and three purple-red spiral bands at outer surface.
Description: Shell medium-sized for the genus, hemispherical in shape with very low spire and distinct sutures. Shell width 75% of holotype height. Outer surface ornamented with three widely-spaced spiral ribs. Sculpture consists mainly of many closely-spaced axial ribs at body whorl, strongest at the vicinity of outer lip and crossed by shallow spiral grooves. Aperture semilunate, outer lip moderately thick with blackish green inner margin and posterior part nearly parallel to shell axis. Columella broad, calloused with two large, robust teeth and a much narrower tooth at the middle. Color blackdark olive-green with white aperture, columella, outer lip, whitish apex and purple-ted bands.
The new species is named for Taiwan where the type material was collected.

Interchangeable taxa

Comparison: The new species differs mainly from Nerita erythrostoma Eichhorst & Nevill, 2004 (Fig.79, bottom) in following characters: (1) middle tooth much narrower, (2) outer lip not wavy at posterior part, (3) sculpture not reticulate, (4) spire more conical, (5) no ornamentation on spiral bands, (6) lack of orange blotch at columella and inside aperture, (7) different color, (8) different localities, Taiwan versus Australia. The new species resembles Nerita orbignyana Recluz, 1841 in red spiral bands but it is distinguished mainly by: (1) spiral bands more numerous (3 versus 2) bands which are not concave and more descending, (2) lack of three rows of white dots, (3) columella concave -not straight- with middle tooth much narrower, (4) presence of orange blotch at columella, (5) outer lip slightly straight, not wavy at posterior end, (6) presence of a deep groove at interior margin of outer lip, (7) right lateral side more concave at dorsum, (8) different localities, Vietnam versus Red Sea. Etymology: The new species is named for Taiwan where the type material was collected.
