Description

Shell small, up to 9.5 mm in length, elongate-fusiform, solid, protoconch small, mamillate, consisting of 2 to 2,5 round, transparent glassy light brown whorls, 5 slightly convex early whorls, suture deep and distinct, spire whorls ornamented with 13-14 strong axial ribs, with 5-6 spiral grooves between them. Grooves form notches in the axial ribs on the early whorls but do not bisect the ribs, penultimate whorl with 14-15 axial ribs, with 5-6 deep spiral grooves between the axial ribs.
Body whorl with 16-17 axial ribs, a fine sub-sutural spiral groove present, with an additional 8-9 deep spiral grooves between them, axial ribs become obsolete near the aperture line, the body outline distinctly indented below the termination of the axial ribs, lower body whorl smooth, 1-2 fine, deep, spiral grooves followed by 5-6 round spiral cords of varying size. Aperture of medium width, adult specimens have a tiny parietal callus
near the anal sulcus. Columella ornamented with 3, rarely 4 columellar folds. Aperture very weakly lirate within, only in senile adult specimens are the lirations strong enough to be seen. Outer lip gently curved outward, round, slightly thickened, thin and straight along lower margin, siphonal canal is wide, little or no siphonal notch. Colour uniform, dark brown with a distinct fine black line at the periphery of the shell and in some specimens a second line at the aperture line. On the body whorl where the axial ribs terminate, the ribs are light brown. Base of shell sometime light brown. Interior of aperture dark brown, outer lip with an orange highlight.

Interchangeable taxa

Vexillum rolani n. sp. could easily be confused with Vexillum micra Pilsbry, 1921. Both species are found in Oman. The protoconch of V. micra is much larger, consists of 4 whorls and is bullet shaped. The ribs are finer, the spiral grooves more uniform and the aperture has strong lirations. The colour pattern differs, being orange-yellow with light-brown spiral lines.
