Description

Type locality: East of Ringgold Islands, Vanua Levu, Fiji Island.
Range: Only known from the southern and eastern waters of Vanua Levu. The very small size of its protoconch leads to presume larger extension. Habitat: On rough gravel bottom, at 350 - 400 m depth.

Description: Shell rather large, solid, heavy, elongated fusiform with a polished surface. Protoconch is smooth, very small of 1.5 whorls. Spire is relatively high.Teleoconch with 7 slighty convex whorls without shoulders. Suture impressed and very shallow. Sculpture of strong orthocline rounded axial ribs (12 on the penultimate whorl). No spiral sculpture. Aperture is narrow measuring 0.47 of the total length of the holotype. Columella is arched bearing 11 equally spaced solid plaits. The three anterior are stronger. Fasciole very weak. Siphonal notch is broad and shallow. Background colour is fawn. Pattern of three revolving brown bands: on subsutural area, on the mid body whorl and one larger on the anterior part. Bands are continuous on the holotype, on the summit of the ribs only for the subsutural and mid bands of the paratype 1 and 2.

Comparison: L. (P.) planicostata and L. (P.) boholensis have a slighty larger protoconch with wider postnuclear whorls, a deeper suture. Their patterns are different.
L. (P.) exorata seems to be the closest relative with regard to pattern and shape but differs by a larger spire bearing shouldered whorls with a deeper suture; axial ribs thinner and less numerous; a different setting of the columellar plaits, less numerous and unequally spaced; a fasciole which is more prominent. Holotype: length 73.5 mm, width 27.8 mm.
Remarks: This species seems sympatric, or at least parapatric with Lyria (Plicolyria) planicostata fijiensis n. sp. in the southern water of Viti Levu, Fiji. Nevertheless, they have never been caught in the same haul. Its minute protoconch, one of the smallest among the Plicolyria leads to sup¬pose a much larger range than its present location.
