This beautiful species is characterized by a large size, a rather broad shape with conical spire, in combination with red brown spiral lines. The protoconch is large, multispiral and purple. The spiral sculpture on the body whorl consists of fine primary spiral cords (which are red brown coloured) with 3 to 7 fine secondary cords in between. The axial sculpture consist of many fine and weak ribs.
RANGE
From southern Japan to the Philippines. Rare. In the Philippines known from off Aliguay and off Balicasag.
COMPARISON
Antillophos nigroliratum (Habe, 1961) is similar in pattern but differs by the elongate shape with much higher spire. For difference with Antillophos lucubratonis and Antillophos dedonderi both similar in pattern, we refer to the comparison under these species.
Fraussen, K. & Poppe, G.T, 2005. Revision of Phos and Antillophos (Buccinidae) from the Central Philippines.
Phos elegantissimus is characterized by its rather broad shape with a conical spire in combination with striking red-brown spiral lines. The protoconch is large and purple. The body whorl is ornamented with fine primary spiral cords, which are red-brown coloured, with 3 to 7 fine, white, secondary cords in between. This species can be distinguished from all other known species of Phos by the combination of shell shape and pattern.
