Description

Shell stout, rather broadly fusiform, umber-brown, shining, seven- or eight-whorled, the nuclear whorls being three, smooth, the remainder obliquely but unevenly ribbed, the ribs conspicuous centrally, on the upper whorls almost nodulous, angular, on the body whorl commencing at the periphery, broad, extending to the base, with coarse revolving lines running across the ribs, close ; mouth rather wide, cinereous within ; outer lip somewhat effuse, ochreous round the edge, not thickened ; sinus wide, well expressed, but not very profound ; columella nearly straight, extended basally, but hardly rostrate.
Alt. : 35. Diam. : 11 mm.
Hab.: ?.
Allied to D. maura* Sowb., but not so large, as that species attains 40 mm. longitudinally. The spire is not so extended, axial ribs longer, and more obliquely arranged, especially on the body-whorl, and the revolving lines coarse but pronounced. Sinus deeper than that of maura. With this also Pleurotoma (Drillia) suavis Smith, might be compared. It might justly come under Hedley's new genus Inquisitor, but I prefer in this instance calling it by the now-to-be-superseded name Drillia, for the present at all events.
