Description

Shell size small for genus, adult size up to ca. 7.8 mm; fusiform, elongate. Suture slightly impressed. Protoconch paucispiral, 1.6-1.75 smooth whorls. Teleoconch of ca. 4.25 semi-translucent whorls. Axial sculpture absent. Spiral sculpture of basal cords, ventrally ranging to just above adapical end of columella. Outer lip thickened, with distinct rim, smooth, bearing only continuation of basal cords. Inner lip denticulate, with six equally spaced denticles of equal size. Columellar callus thickened. Parietal callus weak. Columella with three denticles, extending into aperture. Siphonal canal short, open, straight. Teleoconch whorls off-white in colour, with yellowish-brown axial lines, sometimes merging roughly at mid-whorl. Protoconch pale purplish. Aperture and columella off-white. Operculum typical of genus, pale brown, semi-translucent, with terminal nucleus. Holotype height 6.3 mm.

Interchangeable taxa

This species is most similar to the shallow water Mitrella philia (Duclos, 1846), but differs in the suture, which is not incised, the more bulbous and robust purplish protoconch, the number of columellar denticles and the shorter siphonal canal.

Off Grande Terre and Norfolk Ridge, 180-650 m. alive in 197-285 m.
