Description

Shell small for genus, adult size up to 4.8 mm; fusiform, elongate. Suture straight. Protoconch paucispiral, 1.25-1.5 smooth whorls. Teleoconch of 4-4.5 bulbous whorls. Axial sculpture of very fine axial lines. Spiral sculpture of basal cords, ventrally ranging to adapical edge of columella. Outer lip thickened, with small rim, smooth, bearing only continuation of basal cords. Inner lip with thickened rim along edge, connecting and almost completely obscuring denticles. Columellar callus thickened. Parietal callus absent or very weak. Columella smooth. Siphonal canal very short, open, straight. Teleoconch whorls off-white in colour, semi-translucent. Protoconch off-white, thicker than teleoconch whorls. Aperture and columella off-white. Holotype height 4.2 mm.

Interchangeable taxa

Mitrella minisipho n. sp. stands apart from all known Mitrella species in the thickened rim of the inner lip.

New Caledonia: Coral Sea, and south of Ile des Pins; shells in 360-569 m.
