Description

Distribution: Florida, Texas. Size: 12 to 14 mm
Description: Color white with protoconch light amber on fresh shells; shape elongate-conic; sculpture of short, bladelike costae; inner spaces between costae smooth; 9 to 10 convex, attached whorls; spire extended; suture distinct; aperture subcircular with outer lip thickened and reflected; operculum paucispiral, corneous, brownish. Habitat: Off outer beaches below low-tide line.
Remarks: Protoconch is broken off in specimen in the photograph, and costae are not quite lined up with subsequent costae of preceding whorls. See Clench and Turner (1951); Andrews (1977).

Reaching about 14mm, E. tollini is known from west Florida, Marco Island north to Gasparilla Island, most commonly found around Sanibel Island. It is also known from the coast of Texas. China white, it has 11-16 bladelike costae which are not angled. Apical whorls may have a slight brownish tinge but only on live specimens. Angle from spire about 22 degrees.
Smaller than both E. humphreysii and E. angulatum, the juveniles can be easily confused with both. The irregular spacing of the costae is the most distinguishing feature, along with the more globose whorls than E. humphreysii. The shell can commonly be found along the high water mark in beach drift.
