Nerita fulgurans Gmelin, 1791 Antillean Nerite
Distribution: Southeast Florida, Texas; West Indies; Bermuda. Size: 18 to 32 mm.
Description: Color varying from black to white with color patterns appearing blurred; shape solid, conic, and globose; large body whorl; flat columella bearing teeth or folds; aperture yellowish-gray, circular, with 2 distinct teeth located on inner portion of outer lip; operculum calcareous with a peglike projection. Habitat: Hard substrates like jetties and pilings. Extreme South Texas only. Remarks: A peglike projection found in the operculum is inserted into the muscle of the snail for a tight fit when the animal is exposed; similar to N tessellata Gmelin, 1791. However, the spiral ridges are more numerous on N. fulgurans, and the aperture is generally wider. See Andrews (1977); Ode (1985).
