Description

Shell average to large in size for the group of MITRIDAE it belongs to, solidly build and with a light gloss. Holotype: 16 mm in length. 6 mm in width. The protoconches are broken off in all but one specimen, in which they are eroded. There are 2,5 protoconch whorls which are white. In all shells the protoconch and the top whorls are white. The teleoconch whorls number 7, they rapidly increase in size and the body whorl is large, covering more than half of the shell length. The aperture is smaller than half of the shell length. The suture is shallow, hardly visible, difficult to detect, even under magnification. The sculpture consists of very regular sharp spiral ribs, almost smooth and glossy on top. There are 4 such spiral ribs between the top of the aperture and the suture of the last whorl. Between these spiral ribs is a wide field in pronounced V-shape, covered with numerous very small axial ribs. The aperture is narrow, with a crenulate lip and thick. The columellar folds number 3, quite weak. The color of the shell is a bright dark red. The top of the spiral ribs a little paler than the rest of the shell. Inside of the aperture red. Top whorls white.

Interchangeable taxa

M. kantori n. sp. belongs to the group of heavily spirally ribbed small species of not so deep water in the Philippines. The shape and coloration restrict the comparison to two closely related species: M. tabanula Lamarck, 1811 and M. pediculus Lamarck. 1811. M. tabanula has a much broader and smaller shell. M.pediculus is also much smaller, has a more concave spire, smaller aperture and usually the top of the ribs is pale colored. The sculpture between the spiral ribs is not so pronounced and hardly visible. Three features distinguish this species clearly from all other species, especially when combined: large size, full red color with slightly paler zone on the top of the whorls, white protoconch and top whorls. Kaicher (1976) figured the species as Mitra pediculus from the Tropical Pacific on card nr. 849.

Distribution

TYPE LOCALITY
The Philippines. Palawan. Balabac Island.
DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
At present known from the Philippines and the Marshall Islands. Shells were taken in shallow water everywhere. We suspect that this is a species with a wide distribution and in collections it is "hidden" either in M. tabanula Lamarck, 1811 or M. pediculus Lamarck. 1811.
