Description

The species is readily distinguished on the basis of 1) turbinate, short-spired shell attaining 5 mm in height, 2) relatively wide umbilicus and 3) body whorl sculptured with 7-8 strong, evenly spaced spiral keels. According to HASEGAWA in OKUTANI (2000), Fossarus japonicus Adams, 1861, is a synonym.
Robba et al, 2003. Holocene and Recent shallow soft-bottom mollusks from the northern Gulf of Thailand area: Scaphopoda, Gastropoda, additions to Bivalvia.

Distribution

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Fossarus tornatilis (=Macromphalus tornatilis) was reported to range from Hong Kong to Japan and northward to Siberia. The original material was recovered from Hong Kong Harbor, at a depth of 18 m.
