DISTRIBUTION-Known only from the Solomon Islands; 253-1200 m, alive in 305-786 m. Syntopic with M. brevicaudata (SALOMON 2 stn CP2251), M. jonkeri (SALOMON 2 stn CP2195), M. corporosis n. sp. (SALOMON 2 stn CP2195, CP2244, CP2264), with M. hadorni n. sp. (SALOMON 2 stn CP2291)
DESCRIPTION - Shell rather small, up to 26.0 mm, rather thin, solid, white. Shape slender with elongate spire, base elongate, siphonal canal moderately short. Apex of holotype eroded. Protoconch of paratype MNHN IM 2000-27019 1.5 whorls; first whorl smooth, glossy; last quarter whorl with fine suprasutural spiral cord. First whorl inclined relative to coiling axis by -45°. Transition to teleoconch abrupt, marked by fine, slightly flared larval lip. Teleoconch consisting of roughly eight whorls, upper four whorls angulated, lower whorls weakly convex. Suture distinct, shallow. First and second teleoconch whorls with four fine spiral cords, fifth spiral cord partly concealed under suture of subsequent whorl, interspaces each twice as wide as one cord. Third whorl with five narrow spiral cords of which two subsutural spiral cords finer; all interspaces wide, of equal size, single secondary spiral cord present in few specimens. Spiral cords remaining fine on subsequent whorls. Penultimate whorl with nine spiral cords of which four subsutural cords finer. Last whorl with ca. 24 spiral cords, eight or nine on whorl of which four subsutural cords finer, ca. 15 on base and siphonal canal. Spiral cords on base finer than those on side of whorl, with wider interspaces. All whorls with ten sharp axial ribs, interspaces rather wide. Spiral interspaces crossed by dense sculpture of fine, sharp growth lines. Aperture semi-ovate. Columella slightly impressed, smooth. Outer lip thick, with seven apertural knobs, edge sharp. Siphonal canal short, rather wide, open. Aperture and siphonal canal together roughly two-fifths of total shell height. Periostracum thin, pale brown, vel- vety, forming fine incremental lamellae in axial interspaces. REMARKS - Manaria explicibilis n. sp. is characterized by its upper spire whorls ornamented with shouldered axial ribs that give the whorls an angulated appearance, the presence of three or sometimes four primary spiral cords on the laterally flattened sides of the upper spire whorls, in combination with ca. four finer spiral cords on the subsutural slope, the wide, equally spaced spiral interspaces, and the rather small adult size. Manaria corporosis n. sp is similar to M. explicibilis n. sp. when juvenile but differs in its slightly broader shape, greater number of spiral cords (eight rather than five on the third whorl), the stronger subsutural cords on the lower whorls, the slightly rounded axial ribs (rather than sharply angulated) and the slightly smoother periostracum that seems to be less strongly adherent. Manaria hadorni n. sp. differs from M. explicibilis n. sp. in its more convex whorls with rounded axial ribs, more numerous primary spiral cords, the occasional presence of a single secondary spiral cord in a spiral interspace around the periphery of the penultimate and last whorls, fewer fine subsutural spiral cords, more numerous apertural knobs inside the lip, the slightly taller spire, and the slightly larger adult size. ETYMOLOGY -Latin explicibilis (adjective), clear or easy to explain, in reference to the characteristic sculpture that makes the species easily recognizable.
