Description

Shell solid, bright, whorls convex and a slight depression near the suture which is superficial. Last whorl very large. Aperture semicircular, sharp-cornered in the upper part and roundish in the lower part. Base convex, umbilicus deep and widened, into which there are two flinicula quite evident, parallel, one of them in the median part and the other one near the base. External lip simple, operculum corneous. Columellar area thickened covering the head of the two flinicula. The ground is brown-greyish in colour, with 5-6 lighter spiral streaks closely articulated with flammulae and little stains, white and brown in colour, alternate. Near suture there is one lighter band with little lines brown in colour. Umbilical area dirty white, inside of umbilicus and flinicula often either brown or violaceous in colour. Aperture dark brown in colour, external lip white. Anyway colour pattern is changeable (variant media-albina, media-lutea, minor-fusca etc.). P. similis Monterosato, 1884, endemic species of Gabes Gulf, is recognizable from intricata due to median funiculus much less broad, to lighter colour pattern and to bigger sizes. Anyway this taxon is put in synonymy with intricata by CLEMAM. Embryonal tonus are depressed, with umbilicus already broad. Adult forms are easily recognizable due to the presence of two funicula inside umbilicus. The adult specimens average measures are around 15 mm in height.

Distribution

Distribution: common enough all over the Mediterranean.
Habitat: mainly it lives in the infralittoral zone, on sandy bottoms. It can be found on rhyzomes of Posidonia oceanica too. As all the Naticidae, it is a predator mollusc. At night it hunts small bivalves and crustaceans.
