Description

Shell large for this group of Vexillum. solid, porcellaneous in material. The protoconch is very small, but eroded and broken off in all specimens. From the remains we can conclude that it is of the same color of the first whorls. The teleoconch has 11 whorls, the last whorl covering more than half the shell length. The aperture is slightly smaller or equal to half the shell length. The last whorl is almost cylindrical in shape, concave on the lower part. The suture is deep, well defined on the first whorls, toward the body whorl the suture becomes hidden in a subsutural channel. The upper part of the body whorl is therefore particular, as it forms a thick band which is in fact a small subsutural shoulder. The sculpture of V. gloriae is also unique: The shell is covered with spiral grooves, numbering 10 to 12 between the upper point of the aperture and the suture of the body whorl. These spiral grooves are crossed by axial wavy ribs numbering 13 and 15. On top of this, below the suture there are two rows of tubercules where axials cross spiral grooves. These knobs border a small sloping shoulder between the subsutural shoulder and the rest of the body whorl. The aperture has a crenulate outer lip with 19 lirae inside, the upper ones stronger than the ones towards the siphonal canal. The parietal wall has a small knob. The columellar side bears 3 large folds and a 4th small columellar fold. A fasciole is present. The base color is porcellaneous white with dark brown flecks set just below the shoulder in the upper whorls and below the suture on the body whorl. There is a spiral pattern of fine dark brown lines which are set into the grooves. Under magnification, this looks very beautiful and puzzling. The siphonal canal is darker colored in some specimens: warm brown. Mid-whorl white spiral bands. Inside of the aperture white to pink.

Interchangeable taxa

Vexillum gloriae n. sp. is close to V. mirabile (A. Adams, 1853). Dark brown to black patches on a white background distinguish V. mirabile at once from the newly described species which has an overall brown color. V. gloriae n. sp. is also close to V. angulosum (Küster, 1840). This species. or rather, what is generally accepted as this species, looks as a smaller version of V. gloriae n. sp. but differs. apart from the size, by the more pronounced shoulder, which gives the spire a more stepped appearance, by the presence of red spots in the majority of specimens and the shorter siphonal canal in adult specimens. V angulosum was figured by Sowerby (1880). Reeve (1845) and Tryon (1882). Reeve (1845) however does speak about brown spots, nor red spots and suggests that Küster copied the drawing from Martini. The drawings of Reeve and Sowerby show a shell with red spots.
It is hard to understand why such a large species has remained in the synonymy of V. mirabile. The texture of this species is very different indeed: much more chalky and the shells are completely differently colored. A possible explanation is the lack of material in collections until fishermen from Olango started exploring the deeper zone of the central Philippines.

Distribution

In the Philippines known from Olango Island.the Caubian Reef. Bohol. Nucnucan Island. Polilio and Palawan. Balabac Island. Outside the Philippines, known from Guam. The species is usually taken by divers at a depth between 10 and 35 m and is most probably widespread in the inner Philippines.
