PLEUROTOMA (DRILLIA) TURTONI. Shell briefly fusiform, yellowish, between the ribs tinged with dark brown, below the sutures white, around the last whorls zoned in the middle with white; whorls 10, first convex, washed, the two following in the middle carinated, above concave, then converging, with short ribs about 12 above obsolete liris and spirals 4-6 between the ribs dark brown decussated, below the suture corrugated; last whorl contracted at the bottom; aperture narrow, long, all a little smaller; labrum at the margin thin, outside with varicose arched ribs thickened, inside denticulated; columella white, with many transverse denticles; sinus deep; canal short, recurved. Long, 18 mm., diam. 6.
The colouring of this species is very pretty. The spire has the appearance of being alternately zoned with white and yellow, the yellow zone, falling upon the lower and costate portion of the whorls, is interrupted by a brown stain between the ribs. The lower half of the body-whorl, excepting the pale extremity, is yellowist, and has the appearance of being dotted with brown." This species belongs to that section of the genus which includes Pl. intercalaris, Carpenter, Pl. spurca, Hinds, and a few others. These species have the columella and the interior of the labrum more or less denticulated.
