Description

Shell moderate in size, bluntly fusiform, rudely constructed, seven- or eight-whorled, the apical worn in the type and indeterminate, the remainder ochreous-brown, longitudinally costate, costae most pronounced centrally on each whorl. At the sutures, just below, runs a strong spiral ridge, the costae being likewise crossed by four or five strong lirations ; on the body-whorl these are more numerous (say, nine to ten), the riblets being evanescent basally and most conspicuous when crossed by the second and third spiral lines ; mouth ochreous-grey within ; outer lip slightly flexuous ; sinus well expressed ; columella straight, basally abbreviate. Alt. : 18. Diam. : 5 mm. Hab. : Jamaica.
This came labelled " Pleurotoma bicolor, Sowb.", but it has been kindly compared by Mr. Fulton with that species, which it only very superficially resembles. To my mind it is more akin to Drillia clionelliformis Weinkauff, of which the locality is unknown ; this being slightly larger, but similar in sculpture. It may likewise be compared with Melatoma dampieria Hedley, from Shark Bay, West Australia, but that is nearly double its size, measuring alt. : 30 : diam. : 9 mm.
