Description

Shell biconic, small, with all the typical characteristic features of the subgenus. Colour light yellowish to dark olive brown with lighter coloured blotches above the sutures, sometimes forming a distinct pattern. Protoconch of about 1,5 shiny whorls. Teleoconch whorls rounded with the body whorl sometimes rather stretched or elongated making the shell seem rather pupoid. First three teleoconch whorls with about twelve axial ribs sometimes overlapping on to the body whorl. Sculpture of thin spiral chords, increasing by interpolation of about two to three at each subsequent whorl. There are 10-12 spiral chords on the penultimate whorl and 30-32 on the body whorl. Sub-sutural chord thicker and usually of a lighter colour. Outer lip sharp with internal denticles. Columella with two folds. Sinus distinct, canal short and open. Animal unknown. Size: 6-7mm.
Material studied. All from the Canary Islands.
Holotype, h= 7 mm, w= 3 mm,Tenerife, Guimar, 55 brazas (ab. 100 metres). MNHN Paris.
Specimens of M. gofasi n. sp have a rather variable shell morphology. Most specimens have a fragile looking shell whilst some others, especially from more deeper water, have a more solid shell. Colouration is also very variable.
M. gofasi n. sp. differs from its congeneric species at the Canary Islands by;
1. Its usually elongated body whorl and its pupoid shape.
2. The greater number of spiral chords on the penultimate whorl.
3. Its deeper habitat.
The species cannot be confused with M. smithi from the deep waters of the Azores, which also has a pupoid shape, because that species has fewer spiral chords, a shorter body whorl and also a different colouration. Distribution: only known from the infralittoral to the circalittoral of the Canary Islands.
Mifsud C. (2001). The genus Mitromorpha Carpenter, 1865 (Neogastropoda, Turridae), and its sub-genera with notes on the European species.
