Description

DISTRIBUTION - Western Pacific, known from Taiwan, Philippines, Solomon Islands and Fiji in the southeast; 160- 1288 m, alive in 696-1288 m. Syntopic in the Solomons with M. explicibilis n. sp. at SALOMON 2 stn CP2251, and with C. corindoni n. sp. at SALOMON 1 stn CP1807. TABLE 1 Bathymetric distribution of Manaria brevicaudata. Depth range(m) 02-200 200-400 400-600 600-800 800-1000 1000-1200 1200-1400 0 10 Odd 20 30 Number of specimens REMARKS―The spiral sculpture of Manaria brevicaudata is highly variable, ranging from convex cords that form weak knobs on the axial ribs (primarily on early whorls) to flattened cords that wave over the axials (especially on the later whorls) to smooth with fine grooves as interspaces. The shape of the adapical curve of the axial ribs affects the shape of the whorls and the appearance of the shell in general. The apex is eroded in all studied specimens and the protoconch remains unknown. Manaria terryni n. sp. has a similar shape, sculpture, size and general appearance to M. brevicaudata but differs in the presence of four primary spiral cords on the spire whorls (instead of three) and the presence of secondary spiral cords on the base. DISTRIBUTION - Western Pacific, known from Taiwan, Philippines, Solomon Islands and Fiji in the southeast; 160-1288 m, alive in 696-1288 m.
