Popis

Type locality: East of La Désirade, Guadeloupe. Description Shell small, elongate-fusiform (W/H 0.36, A/H 0.52), with moderately long, stout, siphonal canal Protoconch high, cyrtoconoid, of ca. 3.5 smooth glossy whorls, with gently convex profile Protoconch-teleoconch transition clear-cut. Teleoconch of 6 whorls, suture shallowly impressed. Spire whorls subcylindrical, with flattened profile; first three whorls with weakly defined subsutural band. Last adult whorl indistinctly shouldered, with evenly convex outline. Axial sculpture of numerous low orthocline ribs, 47 on last whorl, becoming more crowded towards aperture lip, 34 on penultimate whorl, with narrow interspaces. Ribs intersected by rounded cords of equal width, separated by narrow grooves, resulting in characteristic finely beaded pattem on last two whorls, extending to shell base and larger part of siphonal canal. Cords weaker on early spire whorl, barely overriding ribs. Penultimate whorl with 9 cords, more clearly separated from each other towards whorl base; last whorl with 17 cords, followed by 6 oblique cords on siphonal canal. Canal moderately long, straight, slightly bent adaxially, demarcated from shell base by slightly widened groove between spiral cords Aperture narrow, elongated, with weakly developed parietal callous pad. Outer lip thin, with undulating margin, bearing 10 fine lirae deep within aperture. Columella with four rather broadly interspaced folds, adapicalmost strongest. Shell uniformly white, aperture cream-white. Radula unknown. Etymology The species epithet refers to the renowned goldsmith Peter Carl Fabergé, and his finely elaborated jewelry masterpieces, alluding to the finely beaded sculpture of the new species. Distribution Known only from upper bathyal depths off Guadeloupe Remarks Caribbonus fabergei sp. nov. differs from C. karudeux sp. nov. by its finer sculpture and a relatively shorter siphonal canal clearly demarcated from the shell base. The lower spire and the beaded sculpture pattem differentiate the new species from C. styria. For the differences with the third similar species, C. macrocephala sp. nov., see remarks under the latter.
