Description

Shell small, adults reaching a height of about 40 mm; thick-shelled and solid; as tall as wide (h/w=1.0). Apex brownish-gray. Teleoconch of about 3 1/2 whorls, rounded. Sculpture consisting of oblique flattened spiral ridges and smooth spiral cords, strongest below the suture and above the periphery. Suture deeply channeled. Columella smooth and evenly curved; aperture round, lip below columella thickened and bent backwards. Umbilicus closed. Basic color dark reddish-brown to orange, with paler blotches and streaks; spiral rows of black blotches, particularly on the base. Columella and aperture nacreous white.
Operculum relatively thick and round, covered with large flattened tubercles; greenish or grayish becoming orange or white towards the inner margin.

Interchangeable taxa

The smooth sculpturing, the channeled suture, the dark coloration of the shell and particularly the sculpture of the operculum make this species easy to identify.

Distribution

Restricted to eastern Arabia (most shells come from Oman).
