Life cycle

S. cerevisiae proliferates in diploid state. Starvation induces meiosis and sporulation resulting in tetrad of haploid dormant spores in a tought container (ascus).
In favorable conditions, the spores germinate and immediately start to mate.

Compare to Schizosaccharomyces pombe.
