known from two specimens from, Pará, Brazil; formerly considered a separate species (e.g., Meyer de Schauensee 1966, 1970, Sibley & Monroe 1990), or a subspecies of M. atrothorax (Pinto 1937, 1944), but see Schulenberg & Stotz (1991) for reasons for considering it a synonym of M. a. melanura.
