Shell ovate, smooth, shining, reddish brown to plum colour or rarely pale brown on the dorsum. The base convex, white; the margin slightly thickened, rounded, white with small round brownish black spots which coalesce to form larger spots at the posterior and anterior extremities. The aperture rather large; outer lip rounded with strong white teeth sloping into the aperture; inner lip slightly thickened with small teeth which do not extend on to the base. Size: 1 inch; the dorsum is deep brown, even in slightly worn shells. Western and central Victorian specimens only rarely show any trace of transverse dorsal bands, but beach specimens from eastern Victoria are more distinctly banded, the interrupted brown bands being wider than those of comptoni. The columellar teeth are large, and less numerous than those of most of the other species. The fossula is crossed by a few regular parallel teeth. Sometimes, however, they are formed only at the top and bottom, with the resultant trough running at a constant depth along the full length of the fossula, and extending into the columellar sulcus. On the average, this species is larger, broader and taller than other Notocypraea.
