Taxonomy

Squalus mitsukurii, as suggested by Compagno's (1984) tentative synonymy, is a large species complex referred to as the "mitsukurii group" (Last et al. 2007). Squalus montalbani Whitley, 1931, of which S. philippinus Smith & Radcliffe, 1912 is a synonym, was resurrected by Last et al.(2007) for a species occurring in the Philippines, Indonesia and northern Australia. Duffy & Last (2007) also resurrected Squalus griffini Phillipps, 1931.

Description

Species in the "mitsukurii group" have the first dorsal origin over the pectoral inner margin, pectoral inner margin rounded not pointed, pectoral posterior margin not falcate, first dorsal spine much shorter than fin base, and tri-dentate lateral flank denticles. Squalus griffini is unusual in that it is the only member of the group that has a continuous white posterior caudal margin. All other members of the group have a dusky or black caudal bar in the caudal fork.

Members of this group were formerly included in the "fernandinus-blainville group", however blainville-type Squalus (sensu Chen et al. 1979) are distinguished by their high, erect first dorsal fin with first dorsal spine about equal to first dorsal base and almost reaching apex of the fin.
