kingdom Animalia - animals »  phylum Mollusca - mollusks »  class Gastropoda - gastropods »  order Neogastropoda »  family Muricidae - Muricids

A completely Old World genus, Bolinus includes .two species. B. brandaris from the Mediterranean and B. cornutus from western Africa. The shells of both species are essentially club-shaped, and characterized by numerous spinose varices, a short spire, and an elongate, straight, or slightly recurved canal. Other characters include the well-developed parietal callus and inductura, features not unique to Bolinus.
Radwin, G.E. & D'Attilio, A., 1976. Murex Shells of the World. An Illustrated Guide to the Muricidae.
Shell from 70 to 200 mm in length at maturity. Average length of 75-150 mm. Last teleoconch whorl with 5-7 low, spinose varices. Spines narrowly open, acute. Aperture roundly-ovate. Outer lip crenulate. Columellar lip strongly raised, partially erect adapically. Siphonal canal long to very long, narrowly open, usually spinose, exceptionally smooth.
The genus Bolinus has been considered for a long time as a subgenus of Murex Linnaeus, 1758. However, it was separated by Ponder & Vokes (1988: 13), and then considered to be a separate genus. In contrast to the three-varical shell of Murex s.s., Bolinus always has 5 to 7 varices on the last teleoconch whorl. Its ancestor is probably Murex partschi Homes, 1853 from the Austrian Miocene. There are two species of Bolinus known to date: B. brandaris from the Mediterranean Sea, and B. cornutus Linnaeus, 1758, from West Africa. A third species was named as B. hamanni Myers & Hertz, 1994 from Venezuela. However, that species is most similar to the three-varixed Vokesimurex hellus (Reeve, 1845) from the same geographical area. The shell morphology of B. hamanni is closer to Vokesimurex than it is to Bolinus, therefore, it is considered here as a four- or five-varixed species of Vokesimurex, and not a species of Bolinus.
