Interchangeable taxa

This species showes a certain morphological variability, often due to the substratum nature in which it develops. Indeed this is the reason for variety names as: contracta (B.D.D., 1891); elongata, (B.D.D., 1891); expansa (B.D.D., 1891) of no taxonomic value. It is easily recognizable from the species belonging to the Arca genus, as there is a lower distance among the urn-bones and for the lack of carinae, since the outlines are more rounded . In the juvenile forms it can be noted a sharper outline compared with the adults that, as growing up, are rounder in form and have a bigger development of the anterior part. The valves sculpture is made by nodulous, radial, close, little ribs. The shell colour pattern is brown, not always uniform in colour. The periostracum is longer, more defined any 3-4 radial little ribs, dark brown in colour. The average length is abt. 50 mm.

Habitat: this species lives on solid, rocky or coralligenous bottoms, fixed by its byssus to the holes and to the rock crevices. It is often hunted by Octopus vulgaris Lamarck.
Distribution: fairly common all over the Mediterranean. It lives from a few metres depth up to more than 200 m depth.
