Description

The shell is of medium size, turbiniform and with whorls and base slightly convex. The surface is granulose. The parietal lip is crenulated and curved, delimiting a false umbilicus. The columella presents a very evident tooth, simple or complex.
The animal has a well-developed epipodium. The cervical lobes can have the margins finely crenulate, being usually similar on both sides, rarely asymmetrical. The cephalic lappets are large. Four pairs of epipodial tentacles.
The species living in the Mediterranean and West Africa have radular characters similar to other Trochidae of the subfamily Trochinae, tribe Margaritini subgenus Valvatella, and tribe Cantharidini. Their radular formula is: n-5-1-5-n. The rachidian tooth has a very wide base which narrows to a cusp, and presents two basic forms: triangular and ovoid; its cusp is M-shaped, sharp or rounded anteriorly and has 3-5 sharp denticles on either side of the base. Lateral teeth are similar to the rachidian in size and shape; the outermost lateral is a little narrower and stronger. Marginal teeth elongate and curved forming a hook-like angle at the beginning of the cusp.

Taxonomy

Subgenus 1 : Clanculus s.s.
The species included in this subgenus have the aperture with very well developed teeth; the basal tooth of the columella is complex, sculptured with two or more folds; on the inside of the outer lip, there are internal teeth extending into spiral lirae; the upper tooth is sometimes fused with the closer one, forming a large anal tooth.
Subgenus 2 : Clanculiopsis
The species of this subgenus have the apertural teeth weakly developed; the columella presents several simple small teeth, a little larger and more prominent than those at the base; anal tooth absent, because the top ridge inside the outer lip is neither enlarged nor fused with the next one.
