Description

Type species: Mytilus discors Linne 1758.
Shell rhomboidal, inflated, generally with three areas, the two at the ends radially sculptured; sometimes the shell is radiately ribbed throughout, or it may be smooth; umbos incurved, placed near the anterior end; ligament linear, marginal; hinge edentulous or crenulated; hinge plate finely notched. Molluscs of this genus are gregarious and often found among the roots of seaweeds at about low tide level. The foot is very flexible and extensile, and when fully stretched out it is two or three times as long as the shell, and becomes almost thread-like. The animal can crawl rather quickly by extending and fixing the point of its foot in front, using it as a fulcrum, and then dragging itself forward.
Distribution: Cosmopolitan.
