Functions restricted to taxon Chilodontidae

The family Chilodontidae has 2 homonyms, one for a small family of rayed fishes and the other in the Gastropoda. The gastropod classification has priority (Rosenberg, pers. comm.) and is used here, although some ichthyologists may disagree. Hickman and McLean (1990) placed the genera Calliotropis, Lischkeia, and Echinogurges in the tribe Calliotropini; they placed the genera Dentistyla, Euchelus, and Mirachelus in the tribe Chilodontini and the family Trochidae. Waren and Bouchet (1993) also determined Calliotropinae and Chilodontinae as subfamilies of Trochidae and added the genus Vetulonia to Calliotropinae. Later, Bouchet et al. (2005) determined Chilodontidae to be a valid family under the superfamily Seguenzioidea, which includes Chilodontinae, Calliotropinae, and Cataeginae, and elevated Chilodontinae to Chilodontidae with its subsequent subfamily Chilodontinae; we follow this classification scheme (Bouchet et al. 2005; Rosenberg et al. 2009). The Chilodontidae is a small family of small gastropods with few species. Chilodontids are similar to the calliostomatids in their trochoidean morphology; however, the shell is typically broader and more flat sided to convex toward the spire, rather than concave. The shells are nodulose, but the main difference is on the ability of the mantle tissue of the chilodontids to form semitubular lobes (Hickman 1998c). In Texas Chilodontidae is represented by one species, Mirachelus corbis, whose size ranges up to 5 mm.
