Taxonomy

The real identity of Callidium triste Fabricius, 1787 is still unknown: according to Lipp (1937) it is identical to Criocephalus rusticus var. ferus, while according to Silfverberg (1979) and Sama (1991) it is identical to Cerambyx rusticus.
According to the description, Callidium triste was only one-third as long as Callidium rusticum. Moreover, Fabricius (1792) synonymised it with Callidium arvense Panzer, 1789 (sometimes deemed as synonym of Tetropium fuscum).
Definitively, it seems that Callidium triste actually belonged to the genus Tetropium and both modern "types" are faked.
